Recreatiebad De Krokodiel

For the new swimming complex De Krokodiel in Middelkerke, Slangen+Koenis Architecten wanted a distinctive, story‑driven play object for the recreation pool. The design took inspiration from the rich local landscape history of Testerep, the former tidal island that once lay off the Belgian coast and on which Middelkerke later developed. This vanished island, shaped by shifting sandbanks, tidal channels, and marshlands, offered a natural narrative framework for the spatial atmosphere of the leisure areas.

A playful reference came from a well‑known local story: a crocodile that supposedly washed ashore on the Middelkerke beach, a tale that inspired the name of the complex itself. We used this anecdote as a light‑hearted anchor for the main feature of the recreation pool. A characterful crocodile play object, echoing the project’s theme and connecting architecture with local folklore.

Creating a story - FJ Creators

We drew inspiration from the surroundings and the history of Middelkerke to create the building blocks that bring the story to life. A unique interplay between the characters of the narrative and elements taken from the local environment was woven together into an atmospheric play and recreation area within the pool.
